Flames Hat
The inspiration behind this hat's stitch pattern was a book on
weaving—Twill Thrills, to be precise. The weaving
patterns in that book grabbed my attention for much of a weekend,
until I had worked out a stitch pattern of a scale appropriate for
knitting. Here, no more than three stitches of any color are worked
consecutively, and though the pattern is 30 rows tall, it's just
12 easy-to-memorize stitches wide.
After a rolled brim of reverse stockinette stitch, the hat is worked
as a simple, unshaped tube.
The tube is folded flat and sewn shut, then the ends of the seam are
gathered at the center and finished with a tassel.
