Ribbed Mittens
In the Winter 2003 issue of
Interweave
Knits magazine, Pam Allen describes a thumb gusset that "steals"
all its stitches from the mitten's hand. Gradual increases restore the
hand's stitch count to normal, and leave the thumb with a long, continuous
line of stitches--perfect for a vertical design element.
In these mittens, that design element is a series of wide ribs, accentuated
by variegated yarn and a simple slip-stitch pattern.
On their own, the mittens appear overly narrow. But the ribbing stretches
to encompass the wearer's hand in a snug, comfy fit.
