Swirl Mittens

These bold mittens aren't just fun to wear--they're also fun to knit.

The fun begins with the cuffs. Two-color corrugated ribbing and braided edges go way beyond the usual solid-color ribbing. Then a traditional Turkish pattern appears on the hands. In purple and bright turquoise, the effect is positively electric.

Placing the gusseted thumbs at the side "seams" keeps the thumbs from interrupting the patterning on the hands. It also makes the mittens ambidextrous.
